Originally formed in October 1971 by a group of anglers attending an evening Fly-Tying class in a school in Ynysbwl.
The association has as its’ expressed aims:-
- a) To promote the art and enjoyment of fly fishing
- b) To promote friendship and sportsmanship between anglers.
- c) To acquire fisheries or waters suitable for stocking with game fish.
- d) To acquire running waters which support or may support salmonids.
The instructor of the Fly-tying class was the Club’s first Secretary and as a teacher and Youth Centre Warden encouraged a number of youngsters to join the Club, some of whom are still members. From the very beginning the Committee took the view that to attract youngsters to the Club it was essential to have a regular meeting place where they could be given instructions in Fly-tying and fishing techniques. Arrangements were made to rent a room above Lloyds Bank in Pontypridd where members could meet each week.
We were then able to show instructional films and subsequently videos, guest speakers and specialist tackle dealers were invited to give talks or slide shows.
During the next few years the Club was able to lease the fishing rights on certain stretches of the rivers Taff, Cynon and Clydach and besides holding its’ own Competitions took part in National Competitions arranged by the Welsh Salmon and Trout Association and various other bodies. Inter-Club Competitions were also arranged with other Clubs.
A number of members have successfully won places in the Welsh Fly-Fishing teams over the years, three of our current members have fished so regularly in the National teams that they have each captained the team on particular occasions.
About 18 years ago Lloyds Bank informed the Club that they wished to expand and gave us notice to vacate their premises.
The Committee at the time took a gamble and bought the former Chapel in Abercynon, after a certain amount of rebuilding and a lot of re-decorating the building was made reasonably presentable and we have continued to hold weekly meetings there ever since.
For a nominal fee various local groups occasionally hold their meetings in our clubroom.
The Club continues to strive to follow the four prime objectives of the founder members which have now been incorporated into our Constitution and over the years managed to lease further stretches of the river which are re-stocked with brown trout every year.
Five years ago we obtained a Block Licence from Welsh Water to fish the Beacons reservoir, which although not giving us exclusive rights enables our members to fish the water reservoir whenever they wish during the season without further payments.
